Question

What should you do with a participant that is too talkative?

Answer

Resistance within a group shows itself in different ways. One of them is a participant being too talkative, which might block other participants from speaking up.
  • It is important to make sure you remain patient and acknowledge everyone’s contributions
  • We spoke about timeboxes before: make sure you have your timebox set for every step in the process. You might also want to consider setting a timebox for individual participants.
  • Make sure you point out the fact that you do not hear some participants and encourage everyone to speak up.
  • Look around, nod and make eye contact with all participants, especially those you want to motivate to share their stories.
  • In case you explored all the suggestions above, a final option is to speak to the talkative participant one-on-one and share how they are impacting the group.
