Question

How to facilitate if you don't understand the topic very well?

Answer

Not knowing a lot about a topic should not be a problem: As a facilitator, you guide a conversation but don’t act as a content owner. There is one prerequisite though - It helps to speak the language and broadly understand the topic.

In order to make sure you are coming in from the right perspective:

  • You can ask clarifying questions to check if you have the right understanding
  • Simply ask for a short intake beforehand
  • Make sure you tune in and listen to their conversations in depth.

But most importantly, if you do not feel comfortable as a facilitator then listen to this gut feeling. It is good to stretch yourself, but don’t go to the extreme.
